The harsh loud vocalization of these birds can be heard from miles away.

 The spurs protruding from their wings are made of bone and used for defense.
La pua que sale de sus alas son hechas de hueso y son usadas como defensa.

 It is a good swimmer, having partially webbed feet, but prefers to move on the ground.

Swans are known to have triumph ceremonies, which occur when a male attacks a rival suitor, then returns to his potential mate to perform an elaborate courtship ceremony while posturing and calling. Both males and females rhythmically dip their heads into the water and then stretch their necks upwards while swimming around each other.

En invierno migra hacia regiones tropicales y es frequente verlo en bandadas en el cielo, en formacion en "V".

En ocasiones se lo ve con la cabeza y el cuello bajo el agua, con el cuerpo en la superficie, en busca de alimento.

Ambos sexos tienen el mismo aspecto, pero se diferencian por su tamano (el macho es mayor que la hembra y tiene una carnicula mas desarrollada).

Otra de las versiones por su nombre Farrapos es que estas tierras fueron compradas por un Frances y que eran administradas por un Portugues, quien al ver los bañados desilusionado dijo " estamos en farrapos" que en español quiere decir " estamos en harapos".
Another version for its name Farrapos is that these lands were bought by a French and were administered by a Portuguese, who when seeing the swamp disilusioned said "estamos en Farrapos" that in english menas " we are in rags".

Ubicada a 95 kilometros de la ciudad de Fray Bentos, San Javier, con sus casi 1800 habitantes, esta ubicado a la orilla del Rio Uruguay, esta poblacion del departamento de Rio Negro es uno de los lugares de acceso a los Esteros de Farrapos.

En el año 2004, 17496 hectares de este territorio, que incluyen los esteros y 24 islas fueron designadas como sitio RAMSAR ( tratado para la proteccion de los humedales).

En la zona del Puerto Viejo a cinco kiloetros de San Javier, hay un camping enmarcado por los montes nativos del parque.
In the visitor center (installed in an old barn erected by the Russian settlers of San Javier) it is possible to know more about the geography and biological richness of Esteros of Farrapos. In the area of Puerto Viejo, five kilometers from San Javier, there is a campsite framed by the park-s native forests.

Los paseos ya sea caminando o a caballo, avistamientos de aves, la pesca y el trekking son algunas de las actividades preferidas para disfrutar en esta area protegida.
Trips, whether walking or riding, birdwatching, fishing and trekking are some of the favorite activities to enjoy in this protected area.

Una de las mayores procupaciones que se tiene con los Esteros de Farrapos es la contaminacion. El gobienro uruguayo esta haciendo investigaciones por la preocupacion de los cambios ambientales, cambios e intensificacion del suelo y un aumento en el uso de plaguicidas que pueden generar mortandades masivas de fauna en el area protegida y su cuenca.
One of the biggest concerns with the Esteros of Ferrapos is pollution. The Uruguayan government is doing research to the concern of environmental changes, changes and intensification of the soil and an increase in the use of pesticieds that can generate massive mortalities of fauna in the protected area and its basin.
