20 datos acerca el Hornero

 1) Es un verdadero artesano del barro,  el que llega a moldear una construccion tan solida y formidable como posiblemente no exista en todo el reino de las aves.

It is a a true clay artisan, who comes to mold such a solid and formidable construction, as possible not exist in the animal Kingdom.

2)  El habitat de esta ave debe contener barro patra la construcion del nido.

The habitat of this bird must contain mud to  utilize in nest building.

3) El territorio de una pareja varia de entre cuarta y una hectarea y es defendido por ambos durante todo el ano.

The territory of a pair varies between one quarter and one hectare and is defended by both throughout the year.

4)Sus principales depredadores son las aves de presa, serpientes, lagartos, comadrejas, zorros y otros felidos.

Their main predators are birds of prey, snakes, lizards, weasels, foxes and others cats.

5) El nido terminado pesa de 4 a 5 kilos y puede soportar hasta 100 kilos. Ademas de lluvias vientos fuertes o el calor del sol. Al construir nidos todos los anos--muchas veces unos sobre otros- estos aparecen sobre los arboles como edificios de departamentos,

The finished nest weight 4-5 kilos and can support up to 100 kilos. in addition of rain, strong winds o solar heat. They build their nests every year-often above about other-  then they appear on the trees as apartment buildings

6)  Es creencia general que el hornero no trabaja los domingos y cuando lo hace, se considera que habra un invierno lluvioso.

 Is generally believed that the horneros does not work on Sundays and when it does, it is considered that there will be a rainy winter.

7)  Al no ser un ave de habito migratorios, vive y se reproduce en su area de distribucion.

 Not being a migratory bird habits, living and reproducing in their area of distribution.

8) Tienen una esperanza de vida que va desde los 3 a los 4 anos, aunque en algunos casos han vivido hasta los 8.

 Have a life expectancy ranging from 3 to 4 years, although in some cases they have lived up to 8.

9)   Se cree que para hacer su nido una pareja necesitar hacer cerca de 1.600 viajes con barro.

It is believed that a couple needs to make about 1.600 mud trips to make their nests.

10)  Es un ave monogama y generalmente las parejas permanecen juntas de por vida.
 it is a monogamous bird and usually couples stay together for life

11)  Usualmente los tordos intentan poner sus huevos en el nido de los horneros, pero en la mayoria de las veces estas se dan cuenta y sacan esos huevos.
 Cowbirds usually try to lay their eggs in the nests of the bakers, but most of the time these realize and take their eggs.

12) Esta ave actua como el mejor de los arquitectos, respondiendo a una necesidad especifica para construir una estructura justa firme y duradera, que usa los materiales que estan a su disposicion y que cumple su funcion a la perfeccion...incluso permitiendo que sea usada posteriormente por otros animales.

This bird acts as the best architects, responding to a specific need to build a strong and lasting just structure, using materials that are available and fulfills its role to perfection....even allowing it to be subsequently used by other animals.

13) Para hacer el nido colaboran los dos y  incluso los pichones que se estan por independizar, lo primero que hacen es buscar alguna ramas gruesas de arboles o soportes firmes de cualquier tipo. La masa es formada en el mismo lugar, para luego construir una base que definira la orientacion de la estrucutra.

Both collaborate to build their nest and even chicks that are ready to independence,  first thing they do is found a thick tree branch or any kind of firm supports.The mass is formed in the same place, then build a foundation that will define the orientation of the structure

14)  La noche en que nacen los polluelos, el macho alumbra el nido con luciernagas.

 The night chicks are born, the male illuminates the nest with fireflies.

15)  Cuando construye su nido sobre la cumbrera de un rancho, este se halla protegido de rayos y centellas.

 When it builds its nest on the ridge of a ranch, this is protected from lightning and thunder.

16) Cuando hace su nido en los arboles, cerca de las casas es de excelente augurio para el agricultor, pues la tierra dara abundantes frutos.

When it makes its nest in trees near home is excellent omen for the farmer, and the earth will give abundant fruit.

17)  Sus gritos delatan la proximidad de reptiles y de animales daninos.

Their cries reveal the proximity of reptiles and vermin.

En la temporada de lluvias el Hornero se prepara para cosntruir su nido, el agua esta mojando la tierra y asi le entrega el material para comenzar con su trabajo. Barro, paja, raices y otras ramas son unidas hasta formar una masa arcillosa, la que es esculpida por los horneros hasta formar una especie de horno. Esa estructura construida despues de secarse y endurecerce es tan solida que puede soportar climas adversos y permanecer en buen estado durante anos.

#In the rainy season the hornero prepares to build its nest, water getting wet earth and thus delivers material to begin work. Mud, straw, roots and other branches are joined to form a clay mass,   which is sculpted by the bakers to form a kind of oven. The build structure after dry and harden is so strong it can withstand adverse weather and remain in good condition for years.

19)  Durante las primeras tres semanas luego de abandonar el nido, los pichones se independizan, aunque permanecen en el territorio de sus padres por aproximadamente 9 meses y incluso pueden ayudar a sus padres a construir el nido para la proxima temporada de reproduciion.

 During the first three weeks after leaving the nest, the young become independent, but remain in the territory of their parents for about 9 months  and may even help their parents build the nest for the next season of reproduction.

20)  Ambos padres alimentan a sus crias desde que nacen hasta los 4-5 dias despues que los pequenos abandonan su nido.

 Both parents feed their young from birth to 4-5 days after they leave their nests.
