A pesar que solamente se ha jugado internacionalmente desde la decade de 1920, los origenes del balonmano son muy antiguos, se piensa que este es uno de los juegos mas antiguo que jamas la raza humana halla conocido.

Este quizas halla sido el precusor del tenis. Los competidores empezaron a usar guantes mas grandes y entonces era un articulo que puede ser considerado como las primeras raquetas de tenis.

The ball was made out of pieces of tightly-rolled material which were sewn together, and as the game changed over time, gloves were worn to allow the participants to hit the ball with more force. This was probably a precursor of tennis--the competitors started to use bigger and bigger gloves, and then items which can be considered to have been early tennis racket.
