El nombre provendria de la expresion en Portugues antiguo que significa "Yo vi un monte".
The name would come from the old Portuguese expression meaning "I saw a MT".

Esta frase fue pronunciada por un marino perteneciente a la expedicion de Fernando de Magallanes al divisiar un cerro.
This phrase was pronounced by a sailor belonging to the expedition of Ferdinand Magellan when see a hill.

MONTE VIDI
Proviene del Diario de Navegacion de Fernando de Magallanes, quien escribio "Martes del dicho (mes de enero de 1520) estabamos en derecho del Cabo de Santa Maria (actual Punta del Este), de alli corre la costa leste (este) oeste y la tierra es arenosa y en derecho del cabo hay una montana hecha como sombrero al cual pusimos de nombre Monte Vidi".
It comes from the Journal of Navegation of Ferdinand Magellan, who wrote "Tuesday of the saying (January of 1520) we were right of the Cabo de Santa Maria ( Holy Mary Cape)(Current Punta del Este), from there runs the coast leste (east) west and the earth is sandy and in the right of the cape there is a mountain made like a hat which we named "Monte Vidi".

Este es el mas antiguo documento espanol en que se menciona al promontorio con un nombre similar al que designa a la ciudad, que en latin significa "yo vi un monte".
This is the oldest Spanish document in which the promontory is mentioned with a name similar to the one that designates the city, which in Latin means "i saw a MT".

Monte Vi De Este a Oeste.

Esta version dice que los espanoles anotaron la situacion geografica en un mapa, ya que el cerro es el sexto monte que se ve sobre la costa navegando el Rio de la Plata de este a oeste.
This version says that the Spaniards wrote down the geographical situation on a map, since the Hill is the sixth mountain that is seen on the coast navigating the Rio de la Plata (Silver River) from east to west.

Con el devenir del tiempo se unificaron esas palabras y quedo Montevideo.
With the passage of time those words were unified and Montevideo remained.

Monte Santo Ovidio.
Esta hipotesis surge de la interpretacion del Diario de navegacion de Fernando Albo.
This hypothesis arises from the interpretation of Fernando Albo's journal of Navigation.

En el se escribe que "corruptamente llaman ahora "Santo Vidio" cuando se refieren a la montana como un sombrero a la que pusieron por nombre Monte Vidi.
In it written that "corruptly they call now" Holy Vidio" when they refer to the mount as a hat to which they named Monte Vidi.

Ovidio habia sido el tercer obispo de la ciudad Portuguesa de Braga.
Ovidio had been the third bishop of the Portuguese city of Braga.

Dada la relacion que los Portugueses tuvieron siempre con los origenes de la ciudad de Montevideo se cree que podria relacional el nombre del Santo Ovidio con la consecuente derivacion del vocablo "Montevideo".
Given the relationship that the Portuguese always had with the origins of the city of Montevideo it is believed that the name of Holy Ovidio could be relational with the consequent derivation of the word "Montevideo".
