PLAZA DE TOROS "LA UNION" EN MONTEVIDEO

# La Plaza de toros denominada  "La Union" fue la mas grande del Uruguay.

# The Bullring  called  "The Union"  was the largest in Uruguay.

# Estaba ubicada entre 4 calles Purificacion, Odense, Tripoli y Pamplona.

# It was located between 4 streets Purificacion, Odense, Tripoli y Pamplona.

# Fue un intento de contrarrestar la decadencia de la ex Villa Restauracion, que tanto auge habia tenido durante el desarrollo del conflicto belico como centro politico, administrativo, religioso y cultural de las fuerzas sitiadoras.

# It was an attempt to counter the decline od Ex Reastauration Villa, that too much boom has during development war, as political center, administrative, religious and cultural life of the besieging forces.

# Se inauguro el 18 de febrero de 1855, con toreros aficionados, dado que los espanoles contratados para la fecha  todabia no habian llegado.

# It was inaugurated on February 18, 1855, with amateur bullfighters, since the Spaniards recluited by that date still had not arrived.

# La ultima corrida fue celebrada  el 2 de Marzo de 1890 a beneficio del Hospital Asilo Espanol.

# The last run was held on March2, 1890 to benefit the Hospital Spanish Asylum.

# La Plaza era de forma circular,de 100 metros de diametro con una serie de gradas concentricas y tenia una capacidad para 12.000 espectadores.

# The bullring was circular, with 100 meters in diameter, with a series of concentrics terraces  and had a capacity for 12.000 spectators.

# El recinto ocupaba una superficie total de 6.082 metros.

# The  enclosure occupied a total area of 6082 meters.

# Estuvo en pie hasta 1923 cuando fue demolida luego de haber sufrido dos incendios en 1869 y 1871

# It stood until 1923 when it was demolished after suffering two fires in 1869 and 1871.

# Actualmente, la plaza lleva el nombre del torero Joaquin Saenz "Punturet", nacido en Jativa, provincia de Valencia, Espana, quien fallece en este recinto el 26 de febrero de 1888 cuando intentaba banderrillear sentado en una silla  al toro "Cocinero", una accion que en la epoca fue descripta como descabellada. En ese momento "Punturet" era un torero muy conocido.

# Today, the square is named afther the bullfighter Joaquin Saenz "Punturet". born in Jativa, province of Valencia, Spain,  who dies in this  enclosure the February 26, 1888, while trying  balustratying sitting in the chair to the bull "The Chef", an action which at the time was described as outlandish. At that time "Punturet" was a well-known bullfighter.

# Estas corridas de Toros eran de autentica cepa Espanola.

# These bullfights were authentic Spain Strain.

# Hoy en dia el unico recuerdo que queda es una placa en la plaza colocada durante los festejos de los 150 anos de La Union.

# Today the only memory that remais is a plaque placed in the square during the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of "The Union".

# En la plaza tambien se hicieron domas, carreras a pie, una pelea de boxeo, un duelo a espada, un combate a muerte entre un toro y un tigre y incluso un fusilamiento de un soldado brasileno convicto por haber matado a un funcionario aduanero.

# In the bullring also there was tames, foot races, a boxing match, a sword duel a fight to death between a bull and a tiger and even the shooting of a Brazilian soldier convicted of killing a customs officer.

# Habia un predio para estacionamiento de coches en la plaza de la Union,  en la decada de 1880.

# In the 1880s there was an area for car parking in the bullring.
