The name jaguar comes from the Native American word yaguar, which means "he who kill with one leap".
El nombre jaguar proviene de la palabra Nativa Americana yaguar, que significa "el que mata de un salto".

The jaguar  is the largest cat in the Americas.
El Yaguarete es el gato mas grande de las Americas.

It can reach a length of around 240 cm, and its shoulder height up to 75 cm.
Este puede alcanzar un largo de 240 cm y su altura a los hombros de mas de 75 cm.

Adults jaguar weigh between 45 to 113 kilograms.
Los yaguaretes adultos pueden pesar entre 45 y 113 kilogramos.

Today, the jaguar is found in South and Central America, from Mexico to northern Argentina. The species' range formerly spread over the U S border into the southern states of America, but had become wiped out there by the 1940s due to hunting. There have been sporadic sightings in Arizona in recent years.

En estos dias, el yaguarete vive en America del Sur y Central, desde Mexico hasta el norte de Argentina. El territorio de esta especie se expandia hasta las fronteras del sur de los estados de Estados Unidos, pero este desaparecio por los 1940s debido a la caza. En anos recientes se han visto de forma esporadica en Arizona.

The Pantanal in Brazil is one of the best places in the world to see jaguars. The best time to visit is the dry season, from late April to early November.
El Pantanal de Brasil, es uno de los mejores lugares en el mundo para ver al yaguarete. El mejor momento para visitarlo es la estacion seca, desde finales de abril hasta principios de noviembre.

Jaguars can be distinghuished from other big cats by the shape of their spots. The spots resemble roses and as such are known as rosettes.
Los yaguaretes pueden diferenciarse de los otros gatos por la forma de sus manchas. Las manchas se parecen a  las rosas y por lo tanto son conocidos como los rosetas.

According to one indigenous myth, the jaguar acquired its spotted coat by daubing mud on its body with its paws.
De acuerdo con un mito indigena, el yaguarete adquirio sus manchas pasandose barro con sus patas por todo su cuerpo.

Jaguars have incredibly powerful jaws, strong enough to pierce a skull and crack a sea turtle's shell. They are fearsome predators and will hunt anything from frogs, fish and reptiles to livestock, cows and deer.

Males defend a range of up to 80-90 km 2 and only come together with females to mate.

Breeding occurs throughout the year, and females have up to four cubs, which disperse after two years.

Unlike others cat, the jaguar loves water-it often swims, bathes, play and even hunts or fish in streams and pools.
